I have designed and made this dolls house myself, with a little help from my late husband who cut up the large 8 feet by 4 feet piece of wood to make it more manageable for me, and also fixed the door hinges on for me, and did the electrics. (I could never manage those myself!) I drew out my own plans.
PLEASE NOTE:
As I designed this myself, I am NOT SHOWING the outside of the house.
DESIGN:
I have made the house in the 1930's style and the furniture in the 1940's style, based on furniture in my parents home in the 1940's.
I have made all the furniture, carpets, curtains, soft-furnishings and the dolls, myself. I also made the fireplaces. The furniture and fireplaces are all made of real wood. I made all the carpets and mats (with the exception of the mat in the boy's bedroom, which was a present). The sitting room and dining room carpets are worked in cross-stitch, to my own design.
THE NAME OF THE HOUSE:
I have called it "WYNFORD" after the late WYNFORD VAUGHAN THOMAS - (PLEASE SEE NOTE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE).
THE PARLOUR
Mr Thomas sitting on the settee.
(He was stroking the cat, but the cat has fallen down!!)
GLASS DISPLAY CABINET
THE CABINET, OPEN
(The green vase, middle. left, was
originally a brown toggle off an old coat.
I painted it green and added some flowers).
CARD TABLE IN THE WINDOW
THE PASSAGE_WAY
(with a gas mask hanging on the peg)
THE DINING ROOM
THE DINING ROOM
with "linoleum" on the floor.
(The sampler on the wall on the right, was made by a friend).
THE DINING SUITE
(I carved the table legs, using a craft knife).
THE KITCHEN
With a rag rug in front of the sink.
(Note the fly paper hanging from the ceiling on the left).
I made the water geyser out of a clear plastic container,
cut bits out and added the pipe. I also
made the white sink with wood. I grooved
the floor to simulate terracotta tiles.
THE GAS COOKER
I made the cooker with wood. The "knobs" are bits of filigree.
THE GAS COOKER OPEN
The rungs inside were made with wood.
My late husband fixed the door knob
on for me.
THE LANDING
I also made the bannister rail and stairs.
The little table was made simply by using a cherub,
bought in a Charity Shop, and painted.
A button forms the base and I made the round
wooden top.
BLANKET CHEST
on the landing
THE BLANKET CHEST OPEN
(and some miniature knitting!)
I made the pillowcases in the chest, and knitted the
blanket with one-ply wool.
DAVID'S BEDROOM
Most of the toys in this room were from Charity Shops
and dolls house shops.
(The tallboy on the right is made in
the 1940's "Utility-style", as we had in my parents home
in the 1940's).
THE BEDROOM OF MR & MRS THOMAS
Mrs Thomas doing the cleaning,
and David, her son, in the background.

NOTE ABOUT WYNFORD VAUGHAN THOMAS:
Wynford Vaughan Thomas (1908 to 1987) was a war correspondent for the BBC, a broadcaster, an author, and a well known public figure. Some of the books he wrote were about his favourite subject, Wales, and the Welsh countryside. He was the son of David Vaughan Thomas and his wife, Morfydd Lewis. He went to Swansea Grammar School where the father of Dylan Thomas, a very well known Welsh poet, was also a student.
Wynford and Dylan became close friends.

You are so inventive! I love everything about your house. Everything. I have hopes that one day I'll manage to make a lot of my own things but for now I'll just keep reading the blogs and picking up tips. I love the coat toggle vase and the cherub table especially! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I really enjoyed working on it. The coat toggle and the cherub items are SO simple to make. It's amazing what you can make by using little scrapped items such as these!
