MY VISIT TO INDONESIA (LOMBOK) (and some LOMBOK DOLLS/FIGURES)

I recently visited the beautiful Indonesian Island of LOMBOK.  We flew there from the Island of Bali for a short trip.  Although it is geographically close to Bali, it has a different culture.  All the "dolls" I saw were wooden carved figures, but maybe in the shopping areas there would be some more "traditional" dolls.  I have posted the doll/figures here, and I have also added a few photos of Lombok

For more information about the dolls and a little information about Lombok, please see my website.  Thank you.

SOME PHOTOS FROM LOMBOK.
PHOTO ONE:  A Temple in beautiful grounds.  It was the summer palace of a King who used to like climbing mountains, and when he became too old to climb the mountains he had a copy of the Temple built.  He had a special swimming pool for his harem of thirty one women and he would go to the pool to watch them swimming and then choose one of the women to share his bedroom with him for the night.  He lived to the grand age of one hundred and fifteen!
PHOTO TWO:  Some of the local traffic.
PHOTO THREE:    A female potter in Penunjak Village.
PHOTO FOUR:  A traditional Sasak house in Rambitan Village.
PHOTO FIVE:  Weaving on a loom in Sukarara Village which is famous for it's traditional hand-woven fabric.
PHOTO SIX:  A miniature Lombok Rice House.  The rice is stored in the upper part , reached by a ladder.  The family sometimes rest underneath it.  This photo shows a miniature rice house but in real life they are quite large, so it is possible for several people to rest underneath them all at the same time

THE BARONG DANCE and THE KECAK DANCE (BALI)

As a follow-up to my previous Post I am now listing a few postcards showing the BARONG dance and the KECAK dance, which are famous dances of Bali.

When sitting in an audience watching a show, it is usually rather awkward to take photographs, so I thought I would list these few postcards instead, hoping that it will give you a better idea of the dances and the costumes.
THE BARONG DANCE:
The Barong is a mythological creature like a lion, and the Barong dance is a story-telling dance about the fight between good and evil.  On the costumes of the male dancers (first postcard), the white squares represent the good and the black squares represent the evil.

(The Barong dance)
THE KECAK DANCE:
The Kecak dance is a unique dance which is not accompanied by an orchestra, but by a choir of seventy men.  The choir is famous for its' "clucking" sound.  It has its' origin in an old ritual dance, "SANGHYANG" or "trance dance".  In the Sanghyang dance a person in a state of trance communicates with the deities or ancestors.  Using the dancers as a medium, the "deities" or ancestors convey their wishes.  In the 1930's the old Indian epic Ramayana was included into the dance.

MY VISIT TO INDONESIA (BALI), and dolls from BALI

I have recently arrived home from the beautiful ISLAND OF BALI. (I also visited the Island of LOMBOK so I will be listing dolls which I purchased from there, as soon as possible).

I have also added some photos of Bali, including the Barong and Kekac dancing.

BALI is such a beautiful and colourful island and is famous for it's dancing.  I was fortunate to see a performance of the famous Barong dancing, a very colourful dance which was performed outdoors, and also a performance of the Kecak and Fire dance which was performed outdoors at the Temple of Uluwatu, at the same time, being able to see a fantastic sunset.
